Samhain Blessings ~ Gratitude, Bonfires, and the Earth’s Abundance

As we approach October 31st, we enter the sacred time of Samhain, a celebration of the last harvest of the year. This festival marks the end of the growing season and the beginning of winter, inviting us to pause, reflect, and give thanks for all that has been cultivated—both in the earth and within ourselves.

I love any opportunity to practice gratitude, and Samhain is a particularly rich time for this. It reminds us to honor the earth for her abundance, the sun for its life-giving energy, and the rain for nourishing the crops that sustain us. The food we eat is not just fuel—it is the result of a beautiful and interconnected cycle between the natural elements. Giving thanks to the soil that has enriched our lives, and to the unseen forces that guide the seasons, helps to deepen our connection with the earth.

As things intensify out in the world, so must the disciplines we have that support, strengthen and support us, also be of utmost importance. Together we can do this.

Did you know that bonfires are a long-standing tradition at Samhain? The word "bonfire" comes from our ancestors, who would slaughter animals at this time of year to ensure they had enough food stored for the winter months ahead. The bones of the slaughtered animals were placed on the fire, which is how we got the word "bonfire"—from “bone fire.” Lighting a bonfire during Samhain is a symbolic way to honor the life cycles of nature, the transition from growth to rest, and the energy needed to sustain us through the darker months.

This time of year also invites us to harvest the lessons we’ve learned over the past months. Just as farmers collect the final crops before winter, we can reflect on the growth within our own lives. What have we nurtured and brought to fruition? What can we release as we enter the quieter, more introspective months ahead?

In my practice, I love to create small rituals to honor Samhain. These may include lighting candles, preparing seasonal foods, and offering a prayer of thanks to the elements. Yoga and meditation also provide a powerful way to connect with the grounding energy of the season. I encourage you to take some time this Samhain to sit in stillness, reflect on your personal harvest, and offer gratitude to the earth.

As we celebrate the final harvest of the year during Samhain, it's important to reflect on our connection to the earth—not just in terms of gratitude for her gifts, but also in terms of responsibility for her well-being. We are living in uncertain times, with the depletion of the earth’s topsoil reaching dangerous levels not seen since the last extinction event. This is largely due to the widespread use of chemicals, herbicides, and glyphosates, which have contributed to desertification worldwide, the loss of vital insect populations, and a deeply imbalanced ecosystem.

The soil that sustains our food is being stripped of its nutrients, creating a future where the earth may no longer be able to provide for us as it has for millennia. This brings even greater meaning to celebrations like Samhain, where we honor the last harvest and the abundance of the earth. It’s a reminder that gratitude must be coupled with action.

The time is now, and our loving awareness and action is essential. Each of us has a role to play in nurturing the earth, whether through supporting regenerative agriculture, reducing our personal use of chemicals, or simply becoming more conscious of the choices we make. By embracing practices that restore balance to the earth, we can help to protect and heal the very soil that nourishes us.

This Samhain, as we light our bonfires and give thanks for the earth’s abundance, let us also commit to actions that honor the future of our planet. Together, we can cultivate a more sustainable and abundant world for generations to come.Let’s celebrate this beautiful moment in the year together, honoring the cycles of nature and our place within them. May the season bring you peace, nourishment, and a deep sense of gratitude.

As things intensify out in the world, so must the disciplines we have that support, strengthen and support us, also be of utmost importance. Together we can do this.
